Your fingernails grow about three millimeters a month, your toenails grow about 60 percent more slowly. A review of nail-related research in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology reveals that the rate of nail growth can actually be increased by such influences as warm weather, pregnancy and even typing. And according to Richard K. Scher, MD, a Columbia University/Presbyterian Medical Center dermatologist who specializes in nail disorders, nail growth may also get a boost from calcium, vitamin D, oral contraceptives and biotin, though further study is necessary.
The slowing of nail growth has been linked to aging, smoking, malnutrition, nursing and cold weather. Nail polish most likely does not affect nail growth and may actually be beneficial in preventing breakage because it slows the loss of water from the nail. Acrylic nails may slow nail growth and result in thinner nails over time. They should therefore be removed every few months to allow the nails to rest. Twenty percent of women have brittle nail syndrome, which is characterized by fragile, frayed nails that grow slowly.
