Whether you are a male or a female, you notice a beautiful woman. Florida State University psychologist Jon K. Maner led a study in which college students were shown head shots of 15 men and 15 women that were flashed on a screen. Each group of pictures included five faces that had previously been rated highly attractive. The students overestimated the number of beautiful women they fleetingly saw, but not the attractive men.
The researchers concluded that people scan the environment for what's foremost on their minds, which would explain why young, sexually active men mainly noticed the attractive women. But what of the female subjects? Evolutionary theory suggests they might be identifying threats to their sexual involvements, according to the researchers. The women who overestimated the number of very attractive female faces most were precisely the ones in committed relationships.
